"Predictably, the real gem of Coriolanus: From Man to Dragon is the fight choreography. Mitch McCoy’s fight direction is superb, crafting battle scenes using not just swords, but incorporating long spears, hand to hand combat, and various shield formations. This production illustrates that stage combat can be practical or lyrical, comedic or surreal. One of the most enjoyable moments of this versatility is found in a face off between Coriolanus and three clownish servants: knife fighting has never been so funny. And when a dreamlike slow motion sequence depicts Coriolanus’s vengeance against Rome, the result is exceptionally visceral. It is a beautiful sight, even when it’s grim. Coriolanus does not shy away from the reality of violence, fallen soldiers naturalistically convulse and gasp through their dying breaths."
- New York Theatre Review - Rachel Kerry
"This wonderfully crafted adaptation will move you both emotionally and physically, although it may not be the best production for the faint of body and heart!"
- Theatre is Easy - Maria Paz Alegre
In the case of Combative Theatre, and their partners in Shakespeare in the Square, however, the fight is put front and center. For their show Coriolanus: From Man to Dragon, Omri Kadim adapts the tragedy to really get to its combative core. And as you’ll hear from the background noise in this interview, there’s more than just a few sword-and-shield hits to be seen…
Listen in as director Yuriy Pavlish and fight director Mitch McCoy discuss how they fill in what’s missing from most productions of Coriolanus, finding the right actors for your fight-heavy show, bringing together theatre companies, resonance with current events, and when you should hold on to a production.
"...Mitch McCoy’s fight direction—sometimes in slow motion, sometimes real time—is one of the most extensive pieces of fight choreography I’ve yet to see in a Shakespeare play...Played well, and this production most certainly is, Coriolanus rolls out in a glorious dramatic arc. From revered warrior to a frustrated man whose lack of impulse control makes him his own worst enemy..."
-Theater Pizazz - JK Clarke
"...In Omri Kadim’s new adaptation of the bard’s classic play, 'Coriolanus: From Man to Dragon' — produced by Shakespeare in the Square with the aptly named Combative Theater Company — verbal and physical wounds vie for the audience’s attention. In some of its best moments, the two kinds of injuries are one and the same."
- Washington Square News - Michael Landes
"I’m here as a director, and my other half here is the fight director, Mitchell McCoy, and he’s amazing. The way I’ve seen him work, he’s similar to a dance choreographer, in that some of them will just show up to rehearsal, and they get a sense of what the scene should feel like, and then he kind of just in the moment comes up with what it should be. And then it’s just a matter of explaining it to his actors and working it out technically. That’s been a lot of what it is. We come into rehearsal, and we say, “Today we’re working the war.” In a very basic way, we storyboard it, the eight vignettes that should be a part of this war. And then we try it out. Most of the time, his first instinct is perfect and looks really good." - Yuriy Pavlish
